Meet the Team: Katy Dickinson, Executive Consultant

In this edition of ‘Meet the Team’, we talk to Executive Consultant, Katy Dickinson.

 

How long have you worked for SBM Services Ltd?

I have worked for SBM Services Ltd for nearly two years now; I started at the company on 20th October 2014.

 

What did you do before SBM Services?

Before I worked for SBM Services I worked for a year as a company accountant for a domiciliary care company. However, for the previous 20 years I worked in a practice environment as an accounts and audit manager, who specialised in small owner managed business and college financial statements and regularity audits.

 

What does being a consultant mean to you?

To me, being a Consultant is more than just a job, it has become my vocation. I care about my clients and colleagues and seeing them achieve their goals gives me a lot of satisfaction. The personal side of my role, the building of strong relationships, emphasising and establishing emotional bonds are perhaps the things that I enjoy the most. Understanding what the customer wants makes a huge difference to the success of a project and it is what differentiates a good consultant from others.

 

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is building the long term relationships with both my clients and colleagues to support them and work with them as a true partner.

 

What are the five words that best describe you?

Organised, precise, reliable, friendly and diligent

 

What is your greatest achievement?

I have several notable accomplishments in my life so far.  Probably the greatest achievement, whilst seeming a cliché, are my three fabulous children; Alfie, Harry and Lilly-Rose.  They are the reason I was put on this earth and being a mother was all I ever dreamed of being.

I was also extremely proud when the hours and hours, years and years of studying finally paid off and I passed my accountancy examination (ACCA).


Meet the Team: Helen Wilson, Consultant and Business & Development Manager

In this edition of ‘Meet the Team’, we talk to Consultant and Business Development Manager, Helen Wilson.

 

How long have you worked for SBM Services Ltd?

I started working for SBM Services as Business Development Manager in April 2014.  This was following a period of maternity leave after the birth of my first son.

 

What did you do before SBM Services?

Before I came to work at SBM Services I had spent the previous five years working in education, working as a School Business Manager and prior to that as a Business Support Manager and PA to a Headteacher.  During this time I undertook the Certificate and Diploma in School Business Management.  Before working in schools, I had experience in a number of other sectors and job roles including PA in a large insurance company and HR Administrator in a national retail organisation and I completed a degree in Business Administration.

 

What does a Business Development Manager do?

I work closely with the Managing Director to ensure the business targets for SBM Services are met.  This can mean that I am helping to manage client relationships and contract renewals, supporting with the development of new services and the promotion of these to clients, implementing the company’s marketing strategy and project management.  Most recently I have been involved in the relaunch of the company website and developing the library of resources for the brand new ‘SBM Toolkit’.

I also spend one day per week at a primary school in Essex where we are contracted to provide business management support in place of them having a Finance Officer in post.  I enjoy still being part of the daily life of a school.  It has been particularly interesting working in a primary setting as previously I had worked at secondary schools.

 

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love that no two days are the same.  The variety of my role and the school business management profession is what keeps me motivated.  I enjoy the challenge of taking on new projects or tasks that are not necessarily within my comfort zone.  It keeps things fresh and exciting.

 

What are the five words that best describe you?

Quiet, reliable, professional, kind and helpful.

 

What is your greatest achievement?

Professionally, I would say I was pleased to have helped a small rural primary school secure over £90,000 of new funding via the EFA Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) to improve both their roof and windows.  They were unaware of this funding stream and SBM Services supported them in completing a successful application.  The school would not have been able to afford this level of work from their own budget.  We have helped improve the learning environment for the students at this school which should have a positive impact on learning outcomes for them.

I am also pleased to have worked on building the ‘SBM Toolkit’ for our clients.  We hope to have produced a service for clients that will support school business management professionals in becoming even more effective in their roles.

Personally, I would say my greatest achievements are my two sons, Jacob (2) & Noah (10 months).   There is quite a small age gap between the two boys which has been…interesting!  I have never felt more challenged than I do as being a Mum, but I get a lot of enjoyment from them, particularly seeing their personalities and characteristics developing.
